(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 07/08/13 -- The Airline division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees expresses its condolences to the families of the victims of the recent crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214.

"Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and with all those who were injured in the crash and we salute the bravery and professionalism of the crew in this emergency," said Michel Cournoyer, President of the Airline Division of CUPE. The plane crash landed on July 6 at the San Francisco airport.

Cournoyer congratulated the flight attendants and passengers who worked together to get passengers to safety and the first responders on the scene.

"In an emergency situation, everyone plays a role in ensuring passenger safety. We want to congratulate everyone who worked together to ensure that so many passengers were able to get to safety so quickly," said Cournoyer.

Flight attendants in Canada are watching closely to learn more about the role of flight attendants, since our federal government has recently agreed to lower the ratio of flight attendants in Canada.

"We'll be watching closely to learn from this crash and apply those lessons here at home. The ratio of one flight attendant for every 40 passengers is crucial. In an emergency situation every second counts. As safety professionals, flight attendants are the first line of defense when things go wrong on an aircraft," said Cournoyer.
