(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 07/10/13 -- SmithGroupJJR, one of the nation's largest architecture, engineering and planning firms, has promoted senior mechanical engineer to the position of director of engineering at the firm's Chicago, Ill. office.

Under Cogil's leadership, SmithGroupJJR's Chicago office will now deliver mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) engineering services to its clients. This adds to its existing services of architecture, planning, interior design, landscape architecture and civil engineering.

Cogil joins SmithGroupJJR in Chicago after spending 15 years at the firm's office in Washington, DC. There, Cogil, a specialist in sustainable design, served as senior mechanical engineer on the internationally acclaimed Environmental Center for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The project became the world's first LEED Platinum project in 2001.

In her new role as director of engineering at the SmithGroupJJR office in Chicago, Cogil will provide primary MEP engineering leadership and oversight of projects and MEP engineering staff. She will also support the marketing of mechanical and electrical engineering services to clients.

Currently, Cogil is working on SmithGroupJJR's most sustainably designed project to-date: the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's new Environmental Center. It's the firm's first project under the Living Building , a rigorous performance standard to certify top-performing green building projects. Once completed in fall 2014, the Brock Environmental Center will aim to produce all of its energy through on-site, renewable sources.

An award-winning mechanical engineer, Cogil co-developed the heat transfer model for below-grade structures in the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory/ U.S. Department of Energy's EnergyPlus building energy simulation computer program. It later became one of R&D Magazine's 100 most technologically significant products of 2003.





Cogil was honored earlier this year with the Clinton W. Phillips Service Award from the National Capital Chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (), one of the largest chapters in the Society. ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a building technology society with more than 54,000 members worldwide.

Cogil is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, where she received a Master of Science degree in architectural engineering. This was preceded by a Bachelor of Science degree in architectural engineering from the University of Kansas. She now resides in Wilmette, Ill.

SmithGroupJJR () is a recognized design firm, ranked Top 10 in the U.S. by Architect, the magazine of the American Institute of Architects. Notable projects underway at its Chicago office include the $95 million Electrical and Computer Engineering () Building for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to be completed in fall 2014; and the $109 million outpatient facility for Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, to be completed in spring 2015. SmithGroupJJR is providing urban design and landscape planning services for Chicago's 91-acre Island Framework Plan.
