(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/24/13 -- Dr. James (Jim) G. Malick of SLR Consulting has been invited by the Government of Canada to participate as a member of the Sustainable Development Advisory Council (SDAC) on the 2nd Federal Sustainability Development Strategy. This appointment came directly from the former Minister of Environment, and Chair for the SDAC, the Honourable Peter Kent, P.C., M.P.

The council is made up of representatives from each province and territory and includes individuals from labour, business, environmental non-government, and aboriginal organizations. It is responsible for providing advice to the Minster of the Environment on the Federal Sustainable Development Act drafts produced every three years.

The Act is a mandate for the operation of 27 federal government departments and agencies. It encompasses sustainability requirements for environmental, national resources and energy facets and involves over 400 implementation strategies. The purpose is to provide the legal framework for the development and implementation of a Federal Sustainable Development Strategy; a system that represents a "whole-of-government" picture of federal action to achieve environmental sustainability and is intended to make environmental decision-making more transparent and accountable to Parliament.

The 1st Federal Sustainability Development Strategy was released in 2010 covering 2010-2013. The new strategy covers 2013-2016. The process involves a 120 day consultation period where members are asked to compare and propose ideas of improvement. Members provide individual input, but are also encouraged to discuss with one another. The new strategy is expected to be tabled in the fall of 2013, at which point the revised document will go to the Federal Cabinet where it is then expected to be presented to Parliament. Jim commented, "It is a true honor and a great opportunity to participate in helping to further shape, develop and support our Federal Government in its strategy on a more sustainable government and a more sustainable future for Canadians."
