Affordable technologies for electro-mobility and partially automated driving are two of the topics under discussion at the 16th International Congress "Electronic Systems for Motor Vehicles" on 16 and 17 October in Baden-Baden (Germany)

(PresseBox) - Electronics are used in many different ways in vehicles: They allow for reasonably-priced and low-emission electro-mobility, raising safety levels using intelligent assistance systems and providing driver convenience with increased use of vehicle cross linking technology. Decision-makers and specialists from vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and service providers will be discussing these, and other innovative developments at the 16th International VDI Congress "Electronic Systems for Motor Vehicles" on 16 and 17 October 2013 in Baden-Baden (Germany).
Congress Chairman Dr. Ing. Wolfgang Runge emphasises the essential importance of this long-established congress for the automotive industry. "For many years we have not just been commenting on innovative developments, but setting trends and making preparations for fundamental decisions to be taken in the automotive industry". One of the key topics at this year's congress will be the high levels of potential for innovation in the area of partially automated driving. Experts from leading OEMs will be discussing the technical and social factors surrounding the highly automated driving technology to be introduced globally as from 2020. In addition, innovative driver assistance systems are becoming increasingly important in the area of automotive lighting technology.
Another central theme of the congress is China, its role as a partner of the automobile industry and the challenges it poses in the market. Speaker Dr. Minghui Liu from the China FAW Corporation will be giving a plenary lecture on electrification as an important trend in Chinese automotive technology. On 15 October, the day before the congress begins, and appropriate to this theme, an introductory day is being held on the factors for successful cooperation with China.
The German automotive industry and its suppliers continue to face the huge challenge of putting more electrically driven vehicles on the road. To achieve this goal, they must find technically feasible and reasonably-priced solutions. In his plenary lecture, Rémi Bastien will be giving a practically oriented presentation on the Renault business model for affordable electric vehicles. According to Runge, "the newest technologies used and commitment to electro-mobility will be impressively underlined at the congress".

Other topics to be discussed by experts in Baden-Baden include the question as to how power supplies can be designed as modular systems and the extent of the influence that new developments, for example, Automotive Ethernet, will have on vehicle architecture. Also under discussion are ways in which connectivity can be utilised and implemented in vehicles, and how the range of mobile services on offer can be expanded using HTML5. Furthermore, they will exchange ideas on how software development can create added value. Speakers from Continental, Ford, IAV, Robert Bosch, amongst others, will be contributing as well as from Volkswagen and ZF Friedrichshafen.
More than 30 electric and hybrid vehicles provided to the congress participants for test drives show that electro-mobility is already part of the reality of automotive manufacturing. Included amongst them are the latest models from Audi, BMW, Daimler and Porsche.
An introductory day held on the 15 October 2013 offers a knowledge base on data bus systems in vehicles and on modern assistance systems. On 18 October 2013, participants can consolidate their knowledge with more information on microcontrollers, embedded software engineering and quality assurance for semiconductors.
The VDI Society for Automotive and Transport Technology (VDI Gesellschaft Fahrzeug- und Verkehrstechnik) is technical sponsor of the event.
