Solar Impulse Depends on Streambox Avenir Mini and Streambox Live to Transport Mission Critical Video to Switzerland for Live Playout On-Air and to the Web

(firmenpresse) - SEATTLE, WA -- (Marketwired) -- 07/31/13 -- Streambox, Inc. announced today that Solar Impulse -- the solar airplane of Swiss pioneers Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg capable of flying day and night powered only by solar energy -- has leveraged Streambox Avenir Mini. A small camera-mountable mobile encoder in a helicopter followed the solar airplane in its first of its kind coast-to-coast journey across the US as well as on the ground in difficult-to-navigate locations like runways or rooftop terraces in New York City. Additional Streambox products were used to simplify the overall workflow, like the Streambox Live Service, which helped minimize the distance the video needed to travel from the US to Switzerland by taking advantage of globally deployed Amazon Web Servers located throughout the world. Solar Impulse was able to stream directly to a server located in the US while managing the playout of video in Switzerland decreasing latency up to 90%. Solar Impulse also took advantage of the Streambox Hybrid HD Software Encoder, which was able to capture 1080i resolution video from a laptop in the field. Multiple video streams were sent to the Streambox Live Server where Solar Impulse was able to easily manage and route the video they wanted to Streambox Media Players and Decoders for live on-air playout. The combination of Streambox products helped Solar Impulse provide live video from difficult logistical locations, thus giving their viewers a unique experience they otherwise would not be able to enjoy.

"This year with Solar Impulse for the first time a plane capable of flying day and night powered exclusively by solar energy has crossed the USA without using a single drop of fuel. With this project we want to promote clean technologies and pioneer spirit and in this current digital age we needed to capture this journey and broadcast live video to our viewers from anywhere. Our partnership with Streambox has made this a reality," said Gregory Blatt, Managing Director at Solar Impulse."

Future plans for Solar Impulse include a 2015 around the world voyage. Streambox will start discussions with Solar Impulse to strengthen the relationship to help deliver reliable low bandwidth video with high quality.

Swiss pioneers Dr Bertrand Piccard (Chairman) and André Borschberg (CEO) are the founders, pilots and the driving force behind Solar Impulse, the first airplane that can fly day and night without fuel. Solar Impulse is a unique adventure that aims to bring emotions back at the heart of scientific exploration, a flying laboratory to find innovative technological solutions for today's challenges and a vision to inspire each of us to be pioneers in our everyday lives.

This revolutionary carbon fibre airplane has the wingspan of a Boeing 747 (63.4m / 208 ft) and the weight of a small car (1,600kg / 3,527 lb). It is the result of seven years of intense work, calculations, simulations and tests by a team of about 80 people and 100 partners and advisors. A plane so big and light has never been built before. The 12,000 solar cells built into the wing provide four 10HP electric motors with renewable energy. By day the solar cells recharge the 400kg / 881 lb lithium batteries which allow the plane to fly at night.
