Political Tensions in Turkey Negatively Impact PC Market in Q2 2013

(PresseBox) - In 2013, the Turkish PC market declined strongly in the second quarter of the year. Desktop shipments contracted by 19.9% year on year to 207,360 units, while the portable PC market slipped 16.1% to 410,919 units, according to International Data Corporation (IDC), the premier global market intelligence and advisory firm for the information technology and telecommunications markets. Political tensions were in a key inhibitor to the country's PC market, as antigovernment Gezi Park protests started on May 28, contributing to both unfavorable exchange rates and declining consumer confidence. Although some larger government and business sector projects in the second quarter involved desktop shipments, vendors shifted their focus to mobile products in order to meet increasing demand.
"Recent upheavals related to antigovernment Gezi Park protests have posed a threat to political stability and had a negative effect on consumer confidence," said Asli Demir Kockal, a senior analyst at IDC. "Additionally, the portable PC market has been negatively impacted by shifting focus to media tablets on both the supply and demand sides. However, innovative form factors such as ultraslim notebooks and convertible notebooks boosted the performance of the portable PC market, particularly in revenue terms."
HP ranked as the leading desktop PC vendor in Turkey in Q2 2013, capturing the largest market share with 19.8%, followed by local vendors Casper and Exper. On the portable PC market, Asus kept its top position from last quarter, with 21.0% market share, followed by Samsung and Casper.
