Fit for the future: optimisation of power plants
The international VDI conference "Operational Flexibility and Efficiency Increase in Power Plants", on the 6th and 7th November 2013 in Berlin, will address how thermal power plants can operate more efficient and flexible

(PresseBox) - European Union guidelines on emissions, technical standards and efficiency are increasingly defining and changing the energy market. This has effects on existing and planned conventional power stations: they must work efficiently and flexibly according to requirement. To do this, specialists must find technical solutions which can be operated economically. The VDI conference "Operational Flexibility and Efficiency Increase in Power Plants" on the 6th and 7th November 2013 in Berlin will deal with these topics and more.
To begin, the conference will look at the challenges and conditions faced by power stations on the European energy market. Oliver Koch from the EU Commission will outline the aims of the current European Union guidelines. The increasing quantities of renewable energy being fed into the grid demand more flexibility from power stations. Representatives from the European Power Plant Suppliers Association (EPPSA) and the power supplier E.ON will give an account of the challenges operators and suppliers have to face. Conference chair Dr Christoph Löwer, from Alstom, Germany, stresses: "With targeted retrofitting and suitable servicing measures, both existing plants and newly build power stations can easily be operated more economically, efficiently, flexibly, and with lower emissions."
During the conference experts will exchange their views on the different technical solutions. Chang Fu from the Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute will give an overview of the operation of ultra-supercritical power plants (USC), with reference to the current situation in China. Specialists will also discuss how CO2 emissions can be reduced by co-firing of biomass and the process technology required for this. Jan Zizka of CEZ will present alternative ways of optimising power plants, including refitting and new construction. The plant builders GE and Hitachi will demonstrate their newly developed turbines while Alstom Germany will present solutions aimed at helping existing power stations to operate more flexibly. Presentations will also be given by RWE, Dong Energy, and other internationally renowned speakers.
"This conference shows the impressive amount of innovative potential out there to cope with the future requirements of climate protection, supply security, network stability and efficiency", says Löwer. The organiser of the conference is the VDI Wissensforum GmbH, with the support of EPPSA, International Electric Research Exchange (IERE) and Central Europe Energy Partners (CEEP).
