Walkers Are Making Every Step Count in the Movement to Stop Diabetes

(firmenpresse) - ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/13/13 -- This year, thousands of people in communities across the country will Join the Millions(SM) in the fight to by participating in the American Diabetes Association's event. Step Out is a fundraising walk that takes place in 125 cities across the country to raise awareness about and to raise much needed funds to help change the future of this growing epidemic that is taking a physical, emotional and financial toll on our country.

Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes is a family event for those who want to become involved in the community and help change the future of diabetes. Participants can walk as an individual or create a team and walk with friends, family, and co-workers. There are all different types and sizes of teams at the Step Out events. Corporate teams, family teams, school teams as well as clubs & organizations are all welcome to participate.

Do you want to show what it is like to live with diabetes? The American Diabetes Association is also looking for Red Striders. A Red Strider is a person with diabetes who has a passion to Stop Diabetes and is willing to put a face on this disease by helping others understand what it takes to live with -- and fight -- this serious disease.

"There's nothing more inspiring than walking through the finish line with fellow Red Striders knowing that you all came for a common cause: to make steps towards ending diabetes," said Heather Berg, National Youth Advocate, American Diabetes Association. "I've really enjoyed talking with peers who have lived with the disease for a number of years and those who were recently diagnosed. Step Out is a great place for finding new friends."

Just like Heather and other Red Striders across the country, become part of the fight to Stop Diabetes and 'Step Out' this year by wearing a Red Strider red hat.

"Every dollar helps, meaning the more people we have on board the better," Berg said. "As a person who has lived with type 1 diabetes for nearly a decade, it is extremely important to me to get the word out about our cause and to fundraise for research towards a cure."

Today, there are nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 7 million people are unaware that they have the disease. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.
