(PresseBox) - Auto-injectors for administering liquid drugs are subject to strict quality control measures. The German armed forces use a testing machine from Zwick to optimize quality monitoring and to lower test costs. It allows automatic determination of the triggering force and time, ejection time and ejection speed, as well as the length of the extended injection needle and the active-ingredient profile.
An auto-injector is a medical instrument ("medical device") with which liquid drugs can be administered. It was developed specially for medically untrained persons. A typical example is the acute treatment of anaphylactic shock in allergy sufferers. Depending on their deployment, soldiers in the German armed forces are also equipped with special auto-injectors. Since these devices are subjected to different environmental conditions due to the global theaters of operations, their quality must be checked regularly. This also applies to the corresponding long-term supply.
High-performance quality monitoring, which also includes the testing of these products according to the state of the pharmaceutical and technical rules, is intended to optimize functional reliability and safety as well as supply management. Measurements of the triggering time and the ejection duration for the active-ingredient solution previously could be made only manually.
The aim was to develop a testing machine for automatic determination of the triggering force, triggering time, ejection time/speed, active-ingredient profile and length of the extended injection needle. Testing on 2-chamber auto-injectors should also be possible. A testing machine from the zwicki-Line with a special specimen grip and a carousel to accommodate the active ingredient was developed to achieve this goal. This carousel is used for testing 2-chamber auto-injectors. After triggering of the injector and collection, the mixture ratio (ejection profile) over time (after analytical examination) can be evaluated.




Key parameters such as the triggering time, ejection time and the length of the extended needle are measured using three (question: 2?) lasers. The collected data is evaluated via the testXpert II software developed by Zwick.
The testing machine from Zwick offers a custom adaptation option as well as integration of diverse measuring systems (laser). Another feature is convenient control via a software interface.
