Rapid growth in online trading of spare auto parts in Europe.

Rapid growth in online trading of spare auto parts in Europe.

ID: 289596

(firmenpresse) - Online trading in auto parts and accessories has grown by an estimated 50% in the last two years alone. More and more drivers are bringing parts purchased online to the workshop and expecting professional installation there. Drivers are also increasingly confronting the parts trade and workshops with prices obtained from the Internet.

Reason enough for VREI, the Verein Freier Ersatzteilemarkt e.V. (a society for a free-trading spare parts market), and 2hm & Associates GmbH to explore this market development further. With 52 member companies, VREI e.V. represents the interests of the leading parts manufacturers and automobile suppliers on the free spare parts market.

Who are the players in European e-commerce? Which shops and platforms exist and what is their importance to the market? What is the commodity flow in terms of acquisition and sales? How are product segments distributed online in terms of original manufacturer quality and budget brands? How will e-commerce in auto parts develop in the next few years?

To answer these questions and to place the results on a broad base, a primary and secondary study of nine European markets was conducted: Germany, England, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Poland, Russia and Turkey. More than 4 million offers on platforms such as eBay Motors and allegro were also tracked and evaluated.

The results show that Germany, England and Sweden, more than Southern and Eastern Europe, already constitute highly developed e-commerce markets. With its very low current Internet share, Turkey takes last place.

Frequently traded parts include brake disks and pads, engine oil, wheel bearings and windscreen wipers. Brake parts, hitches, complete chassis’ and catalytic converters also constitute a particularly high percentage of sales.

As expected, the price is a strong motivation for drivers to order their parts on the Internet. For this reason, it is also not surprising that the sales share of so-called budget brands is significantly higher on the Internet than it is in the classical parts trade.

At nearly 70%, private customers constitute the main target group of purchasers. It appears that drivers and amateur mechanics with technical savvy are moving increasingly from the shops to the Internet. The price and clearly, the convenience, are factors in this. Further growth in the online share can be assumed for the future. Likewise, market consolidation is to be expected.

A summary of the present study, including many details of individual markets and online service providers, is available from VREI e.V. for 950 Euros.
