Telecom Namibia Leverages Zhone Technologies for Advanced Broadband Services
African operator upgrades infrastructure with Zhone bandwidth and multi-service
solutions
Oakland, CA -September 4, 2013- Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a
global leader in FTTx network access solutions, today announced Telecom Namibia,
headquartered in Windhoek, Namibia, will deploy Zhone's MXK and several
additional Zhone services to provide its customers with advanced voice and
broadband services. Telecom Namibia (TN), which currently serves more than
145,000 customers, runs the largest digital telecommunications network in
Namibia. TN will use Zhone's MXK solution to implement Active Fiber and Copper
Access solutions to renovate and update its telecommunications infrastructure.
TN has launched a project to introduce Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-To-
The-Building/Basement (FTTB) technologies into its network in order to offer
innovative and cost effective broadband services to its residential and business
customers in Namibia. The company turned to Zhone with hopes of providing fiber
and copper-based access solutions to 150,000 lines over the next three years.
In addition to introducing new fiber solutions, TN aims to replace its existing
voice and data systems by using Zhone's MXK ubiquitous Access Solution,
providing GPON, Active Ethernet in addition to ISDN BRI (Basic Rate Interface),
to migrate all existing voice services into a nationwide IMS solution (IP
Multimedia Subsystem). This allows seamless integration of mobile and fixed
networks into the existing copper-based network. The operator will also
consolidate its mobile backhaul solutions and time-division multiplexing (TDM)
Leased Lines over an MXK Access System, delivering advanced broadband
performance.

provide its customers with state-of-the-art broadband connection, at a cost-
effective price."

company, it is important to provide bandwidth and multi-service solutions that

Technologies. "Zhone's MXK has provided Telecom Namibia with a wide variety of
services and media support. It has allowed a seamless migration from existing
legacy systems to a full IP based access solution, while also enabling Telecom
Namibia to still handle its current legacy services."
In addition to GPON and Active Ethernet, Zhone's MXK will also provide Telecom
Namibia with POTS, ISDN BRI, ADSL2+, VDSL2, G.SHDSL.bis with EFM capabilities.
Zhone's MXK is the industry's first Terabit Access Concentrator, providing
industry-leading density, switching capacity and throughput, as well as non-
blocking capacity of up to 3,600 100 Mbps GPON subscribers or 360 1G Active
Ethernet subscribers.
The MXK platform guarantees a high-quality experience for residential triple-
play and high-bandwidth business services over any FTTx infrastructure.
