Entropic's System-on-a-Chip Powers J:COM's IP-VOD Set-Top Box for New IP
Video-on-Demand Services; Drives New Levels of Subscriber Engagement
AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, 2013-09-13 07:00 CEST (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) --
(IBC Exhibition; Entropic Meeting Suite - Hall 13; G106/G107) - PIXELA
CORPORATION, a leading Japanese image processing solution provider and Entropic
(Nasdaq:ENTR), a world leader in semiconductor solutions for the connected
home, announced today Jupiter Telecommunications Co., Ltd. (J:COM), the largest
multiple system operator (MSO) in Japan based on the number of customers
served, has unveiled its first IP-based Video-on-Demand (VOD) set-top box (STB)
using an Entropic-powered PIXELA solution. The new device will be demonstrated
this week at the IBC Exhibition in Amsterdam at the RAI Convention Center,
September 13-17, 2013, at Entropic's Meeting Suite, Hall 13; Suite G106/G107.
In August 2013, J:COM and Jupiter Entertainment CO., Ltd., a subsidiary of
J:COM, began to deploy its IP-based VOD service, named 'milplus,' to provide
subscribers with more than 10,000 entertainment choices from across a variety
of genres, including anime, movies and live sports. To access the VOD
programming, subscribers must use the PIXELA/Entropic IP-STB, PRD-MA100-JE1.
The IP-STB uses Entropic's most advanced system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology, the
EN7588.
The 'milplus' IP-VOD service is compatible for viewing across multiple devices
from subscriber's televisions and personal computers to tablet devices and
smart phones. To power the 'milplus' TV service, Jupiter Entertainment chose
the compact profile PIXELA design embedded with Entropic's EN7588. The EN7588
is Entropic's high performance cable IP-STB SoC with a dual-core 5000 DMIPS
ARM(r) Cortex(tm)-A9 processor with NEON(tm) SIMD extensions. It leverages advanced 3D
graphics capabilities, an innovative power management system and offers a
complete broadcast receiver decoder chain, featuring a DVB-C demodulator, a
multi-stream transport processor, and multi-format, multi-channel A/V decoder
engines.
'We worked very closely with PIXELA and Entropic to design an IP-STB solution
for our 'milplus' IP-VOD service that has the advanced media processing,
performance and engagement capabilities required to enable our subscribers to
easily access high quality, high-definition entertainment across any screen,'
said Masato Matsuura, general manager, New Business Development Dept., Jupiter
Entertainment. 'By empowering our subscribers to watch their content in new
ways via the PIXELA/Entropic IP-STB solution, we can both grow our media
business and stay highly competitive in the Japanese cable television
industry.'
'Our IP-STB leverages Entropic's highly-integrated, cost-efficient set-top box
platform with best-in-class features, functionality and performance,' said
Hiroshi Fujioka, president, PIXELA. 'By using the proven EN7588 set-top box
solution we have the foundation to securely and confidently deliver J:COM's new
IP-VOD content to its subscribers.'
'We are proud to be at the core of J:COM's first IP-STB solution as they look
to innovate the cable industry with their new IP-VOD services platform,' said
Roger Gregory, vice president, Marketing, Entropic. 'Our technology coupled
with PIXELA's leading solutions drive new levels of interaction and programming
experiences for 'milplus' subscribers.'
Availability

EN7588 SoC is currently shipping in high volume production.
