On September 19, 2013, St. Kitts and Nevis Caribbean will celebrate its Independence Day, commemorating 30 years of freedom as a democracy. The two-island country has evolved in leaps and bounds, recovering from economic turbulence and natural disasters to stand united as a nation of proud and hard-working people. Steering the course of St. Kitts and Nevis' journey to a prosperous nation is Prime Minister Denzil Douglas, who has won citizens' votes and trust since 1995, when he was first elevated to this position.
Under Douglas, the federation has etched its own identity as a progressive Caribbean economy with a number of international organization memberships, including CARICOM, IBRD, OPANAL, OAS, FAO, WTO and WHO. The country has posted rises in GDP due to the government's decision to diversify aggressively into tourism and encourage foreign direct investment in tourism projects. Denzil Douglas has green-lighted policies such as duty-free import of materials and equipment and training subsidies for local personnel. His education, green energy and employment initiatives have won plaudits.
St. Kitts and Nevis Caribbean has emerged as a well-known country in the West Indies not only for its bustling tourism sector, but also for its efforts to forge strategic diplomatic relationships with developing countries across the globe. As a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, St. Kitts and Nevis Caribbean maintains diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom, United States, Republic of China on Taiwan, South Korea, Cuba, Canada, Latin American countries, Russia and France.
The Prime Minister's push for greater co-operation and participation on the international stage has garnered the country much support from world superpowers. The United States Secretary of State makes it a point to wish St. Kitts and Nevis on its Independence Day each year. Last year, Hillary Rodham Clinton congratulated St. Kitts and Nevis on behalf of President Obama and the American people, thanking Denzil Douglas on continued co-operation for programs such as the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief and the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative. This year, St. Kitts has been presented with a cheque of EC$380,000.00 by the Republic of China for the renovation of the Independence Square in Bassaterre, a historic landmark.
