New Federal Electoral Boundaries Ready for Next General Election
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/01/13 -- -The Chief Electoral Officer of Canada, Marc Mayrand, has received notice that the representation order describing and naming Canada's future electoral districts is in force following proclamation today.
- The new boundaries and districts will be in effect for a federal general election called any time after May 1, 2014. By-elections called before a general election would be conducted using current electoral boundaries.
- Representation in the House of Commons is readjusted after each 10-year census to reflect changes and movements in Canada's population. The is conducted by independent commissions in each province. This representation order includes the addition of 30 new electoral districts, and boundary changes to over 85% of electoral districts across Canada.
- Elections Canada can now begin the work of creating detailed maps for each district and recruiting and appointing the required returning officers.
- The next general election is scheduled for October 19, 2015.
"I would like to offer my sincere thanks and congratulations to the members of the electoral boundaries commissions for their significant contribution to Canada's democratic governance in this redistribution exercise," said Mr. Mayrand. "This process is an important part of Canada's electoral system and it benefited from an unprecedented level of public and parliamentary engagement."
