Law Society Prepares for Second Paralegal Election in March 2014
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/09/13 -- Licensed paralegals in Ontario will vote in March 2014 to elect five of their colleagues to join the Law Society's Paralegal Standing Committee for a four-year term. This is the second to take place since the Law Society began regulating paralegals in 2007.
The Paralegal Standing Committee develops and recommends policies related to the governance and regulation of paralegals. The 13 members of the committee include the five elected paralegals, five lawyer benchers and three lay benchers.
"There are now more than 5,000 licensed paralegals throughout Ontario who are helping to provide more accessible legal services to the public," says Law Society Treasurer Thomas G. Conway. "The Paralegal Standing Committee plays an important role in governing the paralegal profession and we encourage licensed paralegals to nominate their eligible peers and to vote in the upcoming election."
Election reforms adopted by the Law Society in April 2013 will result in all five paralegals being elected as benchers. to amend the Law Society Act that includes these amendments was introduced by Attorney General John Gerretsen on October 1, 2013, and passed first reading.

All licensed paralegals whose licences are not suspended are eligible to stand for election and vote in the online election. Voting opens in the second week of March and closes at 5 p.m. on March 31, 2014.
