CUPE 1393 ratifies three-year collective agreement with University of Windsor

(firmenpresse) - WINDSOR, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/09/13 -- Striking skilled trades and professional staff at the University of Windsor, members of Local 1393 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1393), have today voted to ratify a new three-year collective agreement.

"We're very pleased to be returning to work and providing students with the many important services they've been doing without for the past month," said Dean Roy, President of CUPE 1393.

"There are significant backlogs of work across the University that have built up during the strike and we'll be making every possible effort to clear those backlogs as quickly as possible," he added.

The three-year collective agreement members ratified today includes modest wage increases in each year of the contract and improvements to benefits, without any concessions.

The ratification ends a month-long strike that began September 8, after CUPE 1393 members refused to accept the University's demands that they gut their joint job evaluation system and unilateral changes to their seniority rights.

"Despite the University's best efforts to demoralize and starve us out, our members stood strong and the agreement they ratified today demonstrates that people can stand up for good jobs in their communities and be successful," said Roy.

He also thanked faculty, other staff members and students for their "extraordinary support and patience during the past month. Had it not been for their support, especially the students, securing a fair collective agreement would have been much more difficult, if not impossible."
