Safeguards At-Risk Post-Surgery Patients With Continuous EtC02 Monitoring

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/14/13 -- , a market leader in patient monitoring innovation, will be on hand at the Anesthesiology 2013 show, hosted by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), to provide demonstrations of its award-winning -- Early Detection and Notification System™. In keeping with the latest EtCO2 monitoring recommendations from the ASA, Prefense enables hospitals to monitor at-risk, post-surgical patients who are on opioid drips for End tidal CO2 (EtCO2).

EtCO2, the level of carbon dioxide released at the end of an exhaled breath, is an important parameter that indicates the condition of gas exchange in the lungs. Monitoring EtCO2 can help ensure medical safety during respiratory management, alerting medical staff to indications of respiratory compromise. Nihon Kohden America's Prefense system also enables medical personnel to monitor and track trends on vital statistics on a continuous basis during ambulation via a wireless transmitter. Prefense monitors four out of the seven key triggers (respiration rate from EtCO2 or impedance, oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR), and blood pressure (NIBP)) that are early indicators of patient deterioration -- allowing for faster intervention by clinical staff.

Prefense makes an immediate clinical impact -- in the form of better patient outcomes -- and improves hospital economics due to reduced stays and fewer unplanned ICU and telemetry admissions. "Constant surveillance of key vital signs in post-surgical patients -- even while ambulating -- can make all the difference," said Mike Dashefsky, vice president, Nihon Kohden America. "Our fifth generation Prefense + EtCO2 enables end-to-end monitoring for better patient care. Our emphasis on is just one of the many examples of how Nihon Kohden America employs different thinking for better healthcare."

Nihon Kohden America will be showcasing its award-winning Prefense -- as well as its full line of complete perioperative solutions on the Anesthesiology 2013 show floor at the Moscone Center in San Francisco from October 12-16.
