Harper Government Continues to Put Communities First

The Respect for Communities Act requires consultations with local stakeholders before Supervised Injection Sites can be considered

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/17/13 -- Today the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Health, re-introduced the Respect for Communities Act to ensure that families and local residents have a say whenever someone proposes to build drug injections sites in their communities.

"As outlined in our Government's Speech from the Throne, we are committed to supporting and protecting Canadian families, who work hard to build safe and healthy communities in which to raise their children," said Minister Ambrose. "Families deserve to be heard before a drug injection site, where illegal drugs will be consumed, is allowed to be built in their neighbourhood."

Under the proposed legislation, which is consistent with a recent Supreme Court of Canada ruling, whenever a drug injection site is proposed the Minister of Health would seek input directly from members of the community, as well as law enforcement, public health officials, community groups, municipal leaders and others.

"Our Government is committed to keeping our streets and communities safe. Substances obtained from illicit sources affect public safety, may fuel organized crime and undermine the health of individuals," said the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. "We believe applications to allow illegal drug use in neighbourhoods must be carefully assessed with input by those who will be most affected."

"We urge both houses of parliament to quickly pass this important legislation to prevent new injection sites from being approved before the Act comes into force, ensuring that parents and community groups have a say in protecting their neighbourhoods," said Minister Ambrose.
