People in Both States at Least One-Third Less Likely to Experience, Report Fraud

(firmenpresse) - STAMFORD, CT -- (Marketwired) -- 10/18/13 -- Affinion Security Center (ASC), a leading provider of identity theft protection services, revealed today that within the Midwest, Iowa and Indiana represent the states with the lowest rates of identity theft. For purposes of this survey, the Midwest was defined as Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin. The survey, commissioned by ASC and performed by Survey Sampling International, included a nationwide panel of 1,000 online opt-in participants.

Comparisons to the data compiled by the FTC in the annual Sentinel Report seem to correspond to the findings offered by ASC.

"When we looked at data from other thought leaders in the space, their findings seemed to agree with what we've identified," said Vin Torcasio, Director of Product within . "At present, we don't know whether the key driver is strong legislation, higher consumer awareness or safer consumer practices, but the findings suggest that further research into what is limiting incidences of identity theft in these states would be of tremendous value."

People living in Iowa and Indiana appear to be somewhere between 30% and 50% less likely to report fraud than their Midwestern counterparts. While Iowa and Indiana scored well in both ASC's research and the FTC report, Illinois and Missouri rated as hotbeds of fraudulent activity in the Midwest.
