(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwired) -- 10/22/13 -- Nancy Spector, PhD, RN, director, Regulatory Innovations, National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), , was formally inducted into the American Academy of Nursing as one of the 2013 Fellows on Oct. 19, 2013, during the Academy's 40th Annual Meeting and Conference in Washington, D.C.

Spector was sponsored for this honor by two current Academy Fellows and was selected by the Academy's 18-member Fellow Selection Committee for her outstanding achievements in the nursing profession. The American Academy of Nursing () anticipates and tracks national and international trends in health care, while addressing resulting issues of health care knowledge and policy. The Academy's mission is to serve the public and nursing profession by advancing health policy and practice through the generation, synthesis, and dissemination of nursing knowledge. This year's class of Fellow includes 172 nurse leaders selected from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and 19 countries.

Spector comments, "I am so honored to be selected as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and to be working with such a distinguished group of nurse leaders."

In her capacity as director, Regulatory Innovations, Spector serves as the liaison between nurse educators and NCSBN, providing a link between nursing education and regulation. She also provides cutting-edge resources and programs for boards of nursing, and publishes and presents nationally and internationally on nursing regulation issues. Prior to her tenure at NCSBN, Spector was a faculty member at Loyola University of Chicago, where she taught undergraduate and graduate students. Her research focused on symptom management in palliative care, receiving both internal and external grants for her work. Spector received her baccalaureate degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison; her master's degree from the University of California, San Francisco; and her PhD from Rush College of Nursing, Chicago.

Founded March 15, 1978, as an independent not-for-profit organization, NCSBN was created to lessen the burdens of state governments and bring together boards of nursing (BONs) to act and counsel together on matters of common interest. NCSBN's membership is comprised of the BONs in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and four U.S. territories -- American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands. There are also 16 associate members that are either nursing regulatory bodies or empowered regulatory authorities from other countries or territories.

NCSBN Member Boards protect the public by ensuring that safe and competent nursing care is provided by licensed nurses. These BONs regulate more than 3 million licensed nurses, the second largest group of licensed professionals in the U.S.

Mission: NCSBN provides education, service and research through collaborative leadership to promote evidence-based regulatory excellence for patient safety and public protection.

The statements and opinions expressed are those of NCSBN and not the individual member state or territorial boards of nursing.
