The Chronograph watch is not something unique, in fact (thanks to Rolex) it has been around since the 70s. What makes the Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch so outstanding is its sheer graceful elegance coupled with hi-tech features.
The Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch for men was introduced in the 70’s and it was and continues to be pretty revolutionary. For example, back then watches used to be relatively small in dimension – usually no more than 3 cm across. The dial itself came in several variations but the most favoured was the sunburst gold-tone dial with a blue and red combination bezel for the tachymeter. Again, this was a revolutionary concept for the time.
A little known and much forgotten fact is that the Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch was worn by Col. William Pogue during his Skylab Missions. In fact, the Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch for men was the World’s first automatic chronograph worn in Space.
Another little known fact is that Seiko introduced one Speedtimer Chronograph version for the local (Japanese) market and another for the World market. The Japanese model had the “Seiko Speedtimer” label below the 12 o’clock position whereas the International model had the “Chronograph Automatic” label at the same position (directly below the Seiko logo). The words “Speedtimer” caught on and the watch was popularly called the “Seiko Speedtimer”. To date, this is one of the most sought after vintage watches.
The seiko orange monster watch for men had a single sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position. This measured elapsed minutes and counted up to 30 minutes. As all things back then, this was a finely engineered, beautifully designed watch. Despite its popularity, Seiko discontinued production of the Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch (officially known as the 6139). The probable reason was that rival chronograph watch manufacturers were introducing new models at a fairly rapid pace.
Amazingly, despite the halt in the production, trade in the 6139 never stopped. If anything, it picked up pace with fairly hectic trading in used Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watches. By the 80’s the Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch had fairly large cult following among Seiko fans worldwide and it became a piece of history worth owning. The Seiko Speedtimer Chronograph watch has one of the best mechanical movements and continues to be good value for money.
