5th Edition of Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism Architecture in Shenzhen, China Gives Fresh Purpose to Industrial Heritage
(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, USA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/28/13 -- 2013 is the 5th edition of the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism Architecture (UABB): the only biennale exhibition in the world to be based exclusively on the themes of urbanism and urbanization and is co-organized by Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Shenzhen, a region in China which has emerged through industrialization is now moving forwards, away from its industrial past and is searching for a form of cultural and architectural renewal. Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism Architecture (UABB) in Shenzhen will turn the zone into an international exhibition for all, from December 6th, 2013 to February 28th, 2014.
The exhibition will merge architectural, socio-cultural and artistic visions in exploring the Pearl River Delta's urbanism dynamics. A curatorial team, led by Li Xiangning and Jeffrey Johnson, will create a six-part exhibition that seeks to address questions of geography, followed by an exploration of the boundaries of society through various cities and urbanization themes. National and Regional Pavilions such as United Kingdom, Spain, Belgium, USA, Canada, Mexico, Sweden, Italy and Macau, will be exhibited, followed by a Border Video Gallery featuring video exhibitions featuring the lifestyles of urban citizens.
The second team, led by creative director, Ole Bouman will propose a curatorial programme based on the theme "Biennale as risk": giving a new purpose to industrial heritage. It will feature content partnerships such as Droog Design, MoMA New York, The Netherlands Berlage Institute, 2014 Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition (curator: Rem Koolhaas), and the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). Bouman's team will also renovate and reinvent the float glass not only as a showcase for the exhibition, but also as a stepping stone and source of inspiration for the development of the zone.
Two historically significant venues have been chosen for the exhibitions: an old warehouse at Shekou Ferry Terminal, the gateway of the ferry service in Shenzhen, and a former Guangdong Float Glass Factory. Both of the sites are being redesigned by a team of talented architects.
UABB is not only an event meant to bring academic accomplishment into the spotlight: the goal is also to look into the future and keep up with global trends while allowing for the synergy of Western and Chinese architectural ideas. UABB is a trendsetter in the areas of architectural and urban planning. .
