This year thousands of Canadians stepped up and stepped out for the 23rd annual Parkinson SuperWalk, the country's largest charity walk for Canadians living with Parkinson's disease. More than 14,000 walkers, volunteers, donors and sponsors from over 100 communities across Canada raised over $2.75 million.
"The Parkinson's community in Canada proved once again what it can do when they all pull together across the country. Their collective efforts raised funds that will make a difference to people with Parkinson's today and tomorrow," said Joyce Gordon, Parkinson Society Canada, President and CEO.
Proceeds from Parkinson SuperWalk funds educational resources, support services and advocacy efforts provided by Parkinson Society Canada and its regional partners across Canada to individuals and families.
"Parkinson Society Canada was there for me and my mother so that we could be better care givers to my father, especially during his difficult days. I'm glad we can pass this gift on to other families," says Patricia Peterson, Edmonton, daughter of the late Dr. Frank Peterson.
Parkinson SuperWalk donations are also invested in the National Research Program that enables Canadian Parkinson's scientists learn more about the causes of Parkinson's, develop better treatments and seek a cure for the disease.
Parkinson Society Canada and its regional partners are proud to support 22 new grant, fellowships and student awards. These new awards represent a total of $1,273,879 committed to support new research projects in Canada over the next two years. Including the 13 research awards in their second year, the National Research Program is currently investing $1,758,839.
This includes:
While living with Parkinson's is serious, Canadians were invited to have fun and participate in Pets for Parkinson's, an online photo contest run through social media to celebrate the four-legged family companions who participate in Parkinson SuperWalk. Now in its second year, families entered their pet in a photo contest. Many of the pets walked with their owners at SuperWalk events in September. Each week the three entries randomly selected from all submissions received a Parkinson SuperWalk bandana.
Parkinson Society Canada acknowledges the generous support of its Parkinson SuperWalk national sponsors: Teva Canada Innovation, Naturegg and Roots Canada.
