+   Interest in regenerative therapies for the treatment of articular cartilage
defects continues to grow

+   Successful workshop as part of the DKOU

Berlin / Teltow - Interest in regenerative medicine continues to grow,
especially in the field of orthopaedics and above all for joints. This is how
Teltow-based biopharma company co.con summed up the results of the German
Congress for Orthopaedics and Accident Surgery in Berlin, which set a new record
for visitor numbers with some 11,600 participants. Dr. Andreas Baltrusch, CEO of
the company: "You have to remember that according to experts around 20 per cent
of all the knee and hip operations involving partial or full prostheses can be
avoided if treatment is carried out at an early stage using minimally invasive
regenerative methods. This explains the growing interest on the part of
specialist surgeons in methods that preserve the joint, such as those offered by
co.don."

The procedure developed by co.don of removing, cultivating and re-implanting
autologous cartilage cells means that a lasting treatment is often possible for
cartilage defects, and that the need for an artificial knee or hip joint can
often be averted. The co.don Hands-On Workshop during the Congress met with keen
interest as a result. During the workshop surgeons had the opportunity of
testing the matrix-associated chondrocyte transplants with spheroids in a
product. They were assisted by the experienced surgeons Dr. med. Volker Laute,
Head of the Knee Surgery Section and Medical Director of the Articular and
Spinal Centre Berlin, and Dr. med. Tobias Jung, Head of Section and senior

consultant for Accident and Repair Surgery at the Charité University Hospital in
Berlin.

co.don AG has specialised in cultivating cartilage tissue for twenty years. The
company is based in Teltow, Brandenburg, and has developed a patented and tested
method of cultivating and re-implanting autologous chondrocytes. This enables
cartilage defects to be treated by minimally invasive transplantation, using
nothing but the patient's own cells. There is no need to stick, suture or cover
the spheroids. To date the treatment has been applied successfully to articular
defects in around 5,500 patients in Germany. The company is currently in the
process of obtaining European marketing authorisation for the co.don therapy.
