(firmenpresse) - NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 10/30/13 -- By all accounts, World Maker Faire New York 2013, the Greatest Show (and Tell) on Earth, was an astounding success. Back in Queens at the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) for the fourth consecutive year, World Maker Faire celebrated the innovators, crafters, DIY-ers, scientists, artists, tinkerers, and engineers -- of all ages -- that comprise the maker community in New York and abroad.

Attendees were energized by the do-it-yourself spirit that World Maker Faire radiated throughout the two-day event. They engaged in experiences ranging from learning to solder and weld to seeing 3D printing in action to hearing from experts at over 250 presentations spread across seven stages to taking in new advancements in robotics to launching air-compressed rockets to cheering on the Life-sized Mousetrap -- and much more.

"We continue to see the maker movement build a huge following in New York. It's evidenced by the growth of the event in New York, and worldwide, and the interest and enthusiasm from our attendees, makers, and the media," said Dale Dougherty, CEO of Maker Media and co-founder of Maker Faire. "Our partner in New York, the New York Hall of Science, holds the maker mindset dear to its heart and, given what they are doing year-round to educate people about making, it's a meaningful partnership. Together we are bringing the maker movement to the mainstream."

Here are some highlights from World Maker Faire New York 2013:

More than 75,000 attendees visited the event -- an increase of 36% over 2012

Over 650 makers and presenters shared their projects, inventions, and creations

More than 38% of makers were first-time exhibitors

56% of attendees were first-time visitors to the Faire

U.S. attendees came from 46 of the 50 states; others represented 40 countries from across the globe

More than 750 students and 100 teachers visited World Maker Faire on Thursday, September 19, for Education Day and the Teachers meet-up to learn more about making and to witness the inner workings involved in creating World Maker Faire

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed the second annual "Maker Week," September 16-20, in honor of World Maker Faire

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) announced new legislation to create a grant program supporting STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) proficiency for girls, minorities, and economically disadvantaged youth

World Maker Faire saw a 60% increase in cardboard diversion and 35% increase in diverted food waste compost collected through the efforts of GrowNYC, Build It Green!NYC, and NYC Compost Project Local Organics Recovery Program (a program hosted by Build It Green!NYC). Build it Green!NYC also arranged to haul away leftover materials and structures from the Faire exhibits. Overall 11,057 lbs of items were diverted from the landfill this year.

"This year's World Maker Faire took the maker movement to the next level," said Margaret Honey, president and CEO of NYSCI. "It's now truly a platform for educating people of all different ages and skill levels on what the possibilities are for changing the way we create, manufacture, and make available the advancements of the future. It's a clear signal from the announcements at the event to the significant growth of the event that the movement is viewed as a critical part of the future."

World Maker Faire will reconvene at NYSCI on Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21, 2014, to continue inspiring and empowering the New York maker community.
