City of Twinsburg Officials Keep Their Promise as Income Tax Is Rescinded
(firmenpresse) - TWINSBURG, OH -- (Marketwired) -- 11/06/13 -- In a unique situation, the City of Twinsburg has fulfilled a promise it made several years ago, supporting the rescinding of a quarter-percent income tax by voters on Tuesday.
In 2009, Twinsburg's Chrysler plant, one of the city's largest taxpayers, was closing.
A quarter-percent income tax was proposed by city officials as an emergency funding measure to cover the loss of the Chrysler plant's tax revenue. As a promise to voters, who would approve the income tax, city officials stated that once the city's economy was healthy again, the income tax would be removed.
On Tuesday, the city made good on its promise.
"We are humbled by the trust our residents placed in their city leaders," said Mayor Katherine Procop. "We will continue to operate with fiscal discipline, and I am proud that our administration has proven that a promise made is a promise kept."
The quarter-percent increase helped the city collect an additional $2.3 million in 2010, $3 million in 2011 and $3.24 million in 2012. These funds allowed the city to continue providing excellent municipal services while it aggressively sought economic development.
"Through successful economic development efforts and prudent financial management, we were able to weather the financial storm after the devastating loss of Chrysler," said Bill Furey, at-large councilman and finance committee representative. "It is rare, if not unheard of in this day and age, for a local government to support the rescinding of an income tax. We made a promise and we have lived up to that promise."
After city officials opted to put the issue on the Nov. 5 ballot, 86% of residents voted to remove the income tax.
