(firmenpresse) - SACRAMENTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/06/13 -- CalOHII has awarded contracts to three organizations to participate in an electronic personal health record (PHR) demonstration project.

"Nothing currently exists to aid health information service providers (HISPs)/health information organizations (HIOs) or providers in evaluating the suitability of PHRs for inclusion in their delivery of care," said Pamela Lane, MS, Deputy Secretary, Health Information Exchange and Director of CalOHII.

The pilot -- funded by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, enacted as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act -- will help establish policies and procedures for identifying use cases and the specific conditions for trusted exchange that includes PHRs.

The awardees and their projects are:

The project enables providers to send electronic medical records directly to the iBlueButton mobile app using a trusted mechanism of health information exchange developed in partnership between CalOHII and the National Association for Trusted Exchange (NATE). For this pilot, Humetrix will work directly with the San Diego Regional HIE (which includes the UC San Diego Health System and Kaiser Permanente) and with the Veterans Health Administration.

The pilot will test and demonstrate secure and reliable bidirectional transport of patient data between end-users of NATE community HISPs and patient-owned PHRs created in Microsoft HealthVault.

The pilot will demonstrate an alternative solution to EHR tethered portals. Providing patients with a patient controlled aggregated PHR record maintained in No More Clipboard, patients will be able to view their personal health record from participating providers and facilities in one place including most of the patient's data from the HIE.

The California Office of Health Information Integrity (CalOHII) works in support of the California Health & Human Service Agency's health information exchange initiatives, oversees the collaborative statewide development and implementation of privacy and security policy for the electronic exchange of health information, enforces state law mandating the confidentiality of medical information and ensures uniform and cost effective HIPAA implementation.
