Big hurray in Babelsberg again: After Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest
Hotel, the Studio Babelsberg co-production The Monuments Men will also
premiere at the Berlinale. This was announced today by the festival's
director Dieter Kosslick.
George Clooney's latest film was produced by Studio Babelsberg as executive
production company. Clooney serves as director, screenwriter, producer and
main actor. The film was shot in Germany and stars an acclaimed cast
including Matt Damon, John Goodman, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett and Jean
Dujardin.
The Studio Babelsberg team has again provided exceptional services at all
stages of production. Christoph Fisser, COO of Studio Babelsberg and
co-producer of The Monuments Men: 'With the production of The Monuments Men
we have proved that Germany is highly attractive for international feature
film productions. Germany has a deep, local based crew base and offers high
class film technology companies and suppliers. We shot the film on more
than 40 locations, moving from the heart of Berlin city up to a narrow
mining tunnel in the German town Bad Grund. Our set construction department
even built the Neuschwanstein Castle at the Babelsberg studios because we
didn't want to destroy the original one in Bavaria. Babelsberg
congratulates George Clooney and Grant Heslov and we are looking forward to
an exciting Berlinale 2014.'
George Clooney assembled a high-calibre ensemble for The Monuments Men:
Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh
Bonneville and Cate Blanchett. The screenplay is written by George Clooney
and Grant Heslov, who as screenwriters have twice been nominated for an
Academy Award. The film is based on the book by Robert M. Edsel with Bret
Witter, and is produced by Grant Heslov and George Clooney, who won last
year's Oscar for Best Picture (Argo).
The Monuments Men is a co-production by Obelisk Productions Limited and
Studio Babelsberg. Shooting took place at Studio Babelsberg, in the Goslar
region and in Berlin, among other locations.
20th Century Fox, who has international rights, will release The Monuments
Men in Germany on February 20, 2014. Sony has the US rights and will
release the film on February 7.
The Monuments Men was funded by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF),
Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Mitteldeutschen Medienförderung.
