Made possible through Canada's Economic Action Plan

(firmenpresse) - ROCKY POINT, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND -- (Marketwire) -- 07/14/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, the Honourable Michael Duffy, Senator, today announced the completion of tourism and infrastructure projects at Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site.

"Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site is embarking upon a bright future as a result of significant site upgrades that create new opportunities for visitors and local communities," said Senator Duffy. "The expanded trail system allows visitors to explore previously inaccessible areas, and upgrades to the visitor centre and outdoor stage area support working with partners and stakeholders in new and innovative ways."

Following an April 16, 2009 announcement, the Government of Canada has invested a total of $895,000 in infrastructure projects at this site through funding from Canada's Economic Action Plan.

The infrastructure investments at Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site include a 6 km extension to the trail system, stabilization and exterior restoration of the historic Newson House, upgrades to the visitor centre including the creation of a multi-purpose space and fully equipped kitchen, and enhancements to the day use area, including upgrades to the stage and washroom facilities.

These improvements will allow visitors to better connect with the site. The newly expanded trail system will provide access to previously inaccessible areas, opening up former areas of Acadian settlement and creating an enhanced recreational experience. The upgrades to the visitor centre and the day use area will provide opportunities for communities and other stakeholders to hold special events and become more engaged with the site.

"These infrastructure investments provide additional opportunities for visitors to Port-la-Joye-Fort Amherst National Historic Site to explore, learn and enjoy," said Minister Kent. "Our Government is continuously investing in ensuring Canada's greatest most significant areas are also places where Canadians, from every walk of life, can have some of the world's greatest real and inspiring experiences."

Canada's Economic Action Plan set aside $374 million for improvements of facilities and protection of Canada's national parks and national historic sites. As a result of these investments in national parks and national historic sites, many skilled men and women in construction, tourism and conservation sectors were hired in every province and territory of Canada.
