E981.15: detection of rotor position from standstill to maximum motor speed

Dortmund: ELMOS introduces the BLDC motor controller E981.15. Assisted by a
special process (VirtuHall(R)), the standard product E981.15 controls a
BLDC/PMSM motor without additional external sensors. Under any potential
operating conditions, from standstill to maximum motor speed, this
sensorless commutation method utilizes the same motor characteristics for
the detection of the rotor position. Thus switching between different
detection methods is avoided and the risk of position loss and incorrect
commutation is eliminated. The E981.15 includes controller and driver for
the control of 6 N-channel power FETs with PWM frequencies of between 20
kHz and 60kHz and provides a great amount of error and diagnostic features.

The chip addresses a broad range of potential applications. In addition to
the basic voltage control of a BLDC motor, the regulation of speed or
moments, the sensorless positioning of drive trains, and even servo
applications can be realized. Particularly if applied in highly dynamic
systems e.g. with a very fast motor start at maximum torque or at high
cycles, the VirtuHall(R) method shows its particular strengths by driving
the motor at the utmost efficiency under any circumstances.

The basis for the position detection of the rotor in relation to the
magnetic field is the proportion of the three phase inductivities. The IC
autonomously drives the B6 bridge, and a sophisticated temporal positioning
of the switch-on and switch-off slew rates facilitates the measuring of

current inductivity conditions. With each new PWM period the measured
analog values are digitized, the current rotor position is determined in
real time, and the phase voltages are set for the next period. Sinewave
commutation or block commutation can be selected for controlling the motor.

The extensive motor protection features include among others phase
short-circuit, detection of too low bootstrap voltages, overvoltage and
undervoltage protection, and overcurrent detection. Through the 3.3V and 5V
compatible SPI interface, the component is informed about the desired motor
voltage and the motor's direction of rotation. The IC assumes the required
commutation of the motor and communicates updated data on rotor position
and past revolutions to the microcontroller in each PWM cycle. This
information can then be used for an individual control circuit.

By the use of the sensorless VirtuHall(R) principle, system costs can be
minimized through the reduction of material usage, constructed space, and
weight. In combination with the space saving 7x7QFN package and the IC's
low standby current draw, the result is a high-performance solution for
efficient motor control.
