Calgary Parking Authority: November 28 is Accessible Parking Awareness Day

(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 11/27/13 -- As part of its annual month-long campaign, the (CPA) is asking motorists to leave designated parking spaces for people with disabilities. Starting November 28 and running through the month of December, the CPA will step up its patrols of accessible parking spaces. During this campaign, officers will check to make sure that vehicles display either a .
"We are asking Calgarians to look carefully for accessible signs this holiday season to ensure they do not park in a designated stall," said Troy McLeod, CPA General Manager. "It is very important to leave these spaces for those who truly need them."
From January 1 to November 15, 2013, 5,701 tickets have been issued for unauthorized parking in a designated stall. Last year, a total of 7,075 tickets were issued, with 719 tickets issued in December alone.
"We're asking Calgarians to extend their Stampede spirit through the winter season and not use accessible parking spaces, even for a minute," said Darby Lee Young, Chair of the . "Especially during winter, snow and ice create significant hazards for those in wheelchairs or those with physical disabilities."
The fine for parking illegally in an accessible stall is $200 if paid within 10 days, $250 if paid within 30 days and $300 after 30 days. The fines were raised in January 2010 and were previously $150.
Citizens are encouraged to report vehicles who have parked illegally in designated accessible stalls to Enforcement Services by calling 403-537-7100, option 2.
