(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwired) -- 12/05/13 -- This past month, Southern Alberta Eye Center, became the first training center to offer training on in Canada for ophthalmology residents in their residency programme.

Dr. Lisa Lagrou, an ophthalmology resident at the University of Calgary, performed the femtosecond cataract surgery with supervising ophthalmologist . In total, the procedure took about 25 minutes to complete and was performed in one of the surgical suites at the Southern Alberta Eye Center. The cataract was removed and the patient's cloudy lens replaced with a clear intraocular lens implant.

This is an advanced technique, which is painless, and allows for a rapid visual recovery. It dramatically improves eyesight and can also correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and even presbyopia in some cases.

Dr. Lagrou's feedback on the experience of performing femtosecond cataract surgery was very positive. Using a is "Faster and uses less phako energy which is safer for the patients. For ophthalmologists in their residency, this is much safer since capsularhexis is difficult when starting. This is where ophthalmic surgery will be in the next 10 years. Learning both the manual technique and the femto technique will ensure that residents can perform both in the field." Under Dr. Mitchell's supervision, the procedure went flawlessly and the patient's cataract was safely and painlessly removed.

This event marks an important step for the training of new ophthalmologists in Canada with the introduction of advanced femtosecond lasers, such as the Catalys Precision Laser System for use in .

For ophthalmologists and medical students in residence, the Catalys Precision Laser System represents the next generation of laser cataract removal and marks a major step forward in training new physicians.

Benefits for Ophthalmic Surgeons

In recent years, femtosecond laser and 3D imaging technology have been incorporated into cataract surgery to enhance the precision, and a dramatically improved ability to customize the procedure. The Catalys Precision Laser System offers a level of precision and safety that is superior to all other femtosecond lasers currently available.

Using the Catalys Precision Laser System for corrective eye surgery allows ophthalmologists to offer a safe, customized procedure with a level of precision that wasn't previously achievable with traditional surgical methods.

Ophthalmologists interested in using the Catalys System at the Southern Alberta Eye Centre for treating cataracts can now become with training and supervision from OptiMedica staff. Physicians may contact the Southern Alberta Eye Center directly for more information about becoming certified on the Catalys Precision Laser System and using this femtosecond laser technology as part of their practice.
