Your Eyes Still Need UV Protection in the Winter

(firmenpresse) - Contrary to popular belief, people who wear sunglasses in the winter are not just trying to look cool. Overexposure to harmful UV rays can still happen on cold, snowy and even cloudy days. In fact, cloud cover has not been shown to significantly reduce UV levels, and fresh snow can actually increase the harmful effects of UV radiation by reflecting it. Basically, a good pair of sunglasses should be sitting right next to your gloves, coat and earmuffs during the winter season.
Overexposure to the sun can lead to eye problems such as cataracts, macular degeneration, surface growths and photokeratitis. Most of these issues happen as a result of exposure to UV radiation over a long period of time. People with an increased risk of developing long-term problems from retinal damage include those who test low for vitamin C levels. Dark-eyed people should also be just as concerned with UV radiation as those with blue eyes, as it affects them the same.
The best way to protect your eyes throughout the entire year is to wear frames that fit snugly and wrap around your face. The wrap-around style is ideal because it provides complete protection from any stray sunlight that may be able to sneak in from above. As you go about your day, don’t be mistaken in thinking you should remove your sunglasses while you’re in the shade. Your eyes will still be exposed to invisible UV rays as they reflect off of cement surfaces and buildings. Last but not least, make sure the sunglasses you choose block 100-percent of UV rays.
