From 0 to 100 km/h in 2.13 seconds? 100% electrically-driven

(PresseBox) - Electric drives from Kirchheim/Teck have already set a new record again. This time, it was students from Delft in the Netherlands that succeeded in setting the new Guinness World Record.
Once the students from Delft University won the title of this year's Formula Student Electric Germany for the third time in a row, the challenge still remaining was to break the world record of the GreenTeam from Stuttgart (also equipped with AMK motors). And so they set out on September 20, 2013, to earn an entry in the famous Guinness World Records. With an official time of 2.13 seconds, the students achieved an acceleration value that far beats the acceleration of a Formula 1 bolide (from 0 to 100 km/h in around 2.5 seconds).
Each wheel of the the world record-setting auto is driven by a multi-pole cylindrical-rotor motor with embedded magnets. The high power density is a critical reason for the low mass of the drive. This is especially important for four-wheel drive vehicles because the motors are installed close to the hub. The ultracompact servo inverters of AMK are ideal for the lightweight vehicle construction and contribute significantly to the tremendous acceleration values. The motors can feed back braking energy in generator mode, which allows a smaller battery design. This weight reduction also contributes to the winning concept of the race team from Delft.
