Considerable energy savings in refrigeration equipment to K-food stores
(Thomson Reuters ONE) - KESKO FOOD LTD PRESS RELEASE 08.07.2009 AT 10.00All new freezers acquired to K-food stores have been fitted with lidsand doors since the beginning of 2008. As for older island freezers,K-food stores have now started a project to test installingretrofittable lids and new fan motors to the existing freezers. Thetotal value of the project is nearly one million euros and it will beparticipated by 40 K-food stores. When implemented, the initiativewill reduce annual electricity consumption by around 3.2 millionkilowatt-hours.The new project will contribute to energy savings and the adoption ofnew technology in old refrigeration equipment. Lids on islandfreezers will save about 40 percent of electrical energy comparedwith conventional freezers without lids. The K-food storesparticipating in the project will reduce their combined annualconsumption of electrical energy by some 3.2 million kilowatt-hours.Savings are significant, as they correspond to the annual energyconsumption of some 150 one-family houses. Less frequent defrostingand smaller fan and cooling power required will also generateconsiderable electricity savings. Thanks to the steady temperature, lids will also improve the quality and shelf-life of merchandise.Fitting freezers in K-food stores' with lids is part of theimplementation of the energy savings objectives of Kesko'sresponsibility programme published in spring 2009. The K-Groupparticipates in the trading sector energy efficiency agreement andhas agreed to improve the efficiency of energy consumptionconsiderably by the end of 2016. After the actions have beencompleted, annual energy savings will exceed 65 millionkilowatt-hours starting from 2017."In Kesko Food, energy efficiency and systematic actions to increasethe efficiency of energy consumption form a central part of all ouroperations. For example, when we renovate K-food stores we alwaysfurther improve their energy efficiency," says Jari Suuronen, KeskoFood's Maintenence Manager."Efficient monitoring of consumption, determined levels of specificconsumption for different store types and competent energy managementhave provided the basis for the K-Group's work for energy savings foryears. Our work has brought results, as during the years 1995-2006 wehave managed to save relatively some 60% of heat energy and some 20%of electrical energy," continues Jari Suuronen.Further information:Purchasing Manager Vesa Kortesniemi, Kesko Food Ltd, tel. +358 105322445Technology Manager Mika Järvenpää, Kesko Food Ltd, tel. +358 105323561Kesko (www.kesko.fi) is a retail specialist whose stores offerquality to the daily lives of consumers.
