Specific Claims Tribunal-Beardy's & Okemasis Annuities Claim
(firmenpresse) - SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwired) -- 09/16/14 -- The Beardy's & Okemasis First Nation originally filed the Treaty Annuities Claim with the Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development on December 6, 2001.
Seven years later, On June 17, 2008, the Specific Claims Branch advised the First Nation of its position that the Treaty Annuities Claim fell outside of the scope of the Specific Claims Policy on the grounds that the termination of treaty annuities and other losses were owed to individuals rather than the First Nation as a whole.
It is the Claimant's submission that the subject matter of this claim is rather straightforward: it is a specific claim brought by the successor First Nation of the historical Beardy's and Okemasis Bands for compensation for damages suffered by the Beardy's and Okemasis Bands resulting from the Crown's unilateral termination of the Treaty 6 right to annual payments from 1885-1889 as a collective punishment for the Band's alleged participation in the 1885 Rebellion.
It is the First Nation's position that the Crown is liable for the breaches of its legal, equitable and honourable duties, and that the First Nation is entitled to compensation resulting from such breaches.
The Beardy's & Okemasis Specific Claims Tribunal Hearings resume at the Wanuskewin Heritage Park, in Saskatoon, Saskatechewan on September 16, 2014 thru to September 19, 2014.
