LAUNCH OF 'COFFEE&CLIMATE' (C&C) INITIATIVE

Eschborn/Hamburg, Germany, Apr. 6th, 2011 -The echo of the Climate Change
Conference in Cancún is still sounding in our ears: there is no agreement
following up the Kyoto Protocol supporting the efforts to lower green house
gas emissions by carbon credits yet. And despite various speculations on
the consequences of this, one thing remains clear: climate change is
happening.
In the coffee sector, the forecasted changes in climate are likely to have
a considerable impact on tomorrow's supply of the popular bean and
beverage. Current growing regions might no longer be suitable, stress
factors such as extended drought periods and heavy rains can restrict plant
growth and reduce production. Next to this, smallholder coffee farmers will
face even bigger challenges to make a reasonable living than today.
Therefore, at the initiative of the foundation Hanns R. Neumann Stiftung, a
select of coffee companies and international development organizations has
formed a Development Partnership, the initiative for 'Coffee&Climate'
(C&C).
Its founding members are: Gustav Paulig Ltd. (Finland), Joh. Johannson
Kaffe A.S. (Norway), Löfbergs Lila AB (Sweden), Neumann Gruppe GmbH
(Germany), Tchibo GmbH (Germany), five established European coffee
companies who have met and pooled their sustainability efforts in the
International Coffee Partners (1). The two other founding members are the
foundation Fondazione Giuseppe e Pericle Lavazza Onlus (Italy) and, on
behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and
Development, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit
GmbH (GIZ; Germany). The Chairpersons are Giuseppe Lavazza and Bertel
Paulig. C&C is pre-competitive and inviting further committed members to
join, aiming at spreading across the global coffee sector.
The vision of the partnership is to enable all coffee farmers worldwide to
effectively respond to climate change. By bridging climate change science
and proven farming methods, comprehensible and hands-on tools are developed
and provided to the producers. Next to this, as part of the approach,
suitable financial support structures are designed. C&C is striving to
become the leading climate change hub within the sector. First efforts will
be put into practice in pilot projects in Brazil, Guatemala, Vietnam and
Tanzania, setting ground to roll out initial findings to coffee production
countries worldwide.
