Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on Canada's Selection for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 09/19/14 -- I am delighted that the feature film Mommy, directed by Xavier Dolan and co-produced by Xavier Dolan and Nancy Grant, has been chosen as Canada's candidate for a nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Academy Awards.
Through their incredible talent and creativity, Canadian filmmakers are helping to promote the excellence of our audiovisual industry at home and abroad. These artists are a source of inspiration and pride for Canadians and wonderful ambassadors of our culture. Our country's candidate for Best Foreign Film also received the Special Jury Prize at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
Our Government knows that the Canadian audiovisual industry contributes to the vitality of our culture and is an important sector of our economy. In 2012-13, film and television production in Canada generated $5.8 billion and close to 128,000 jobs. Every year, we invest more than $600 million in the audiovisual sector through Telefilm Canada, the National Film Board, the Canada Media Fund and tax credit programs.
On behalf of the Government of Canada and of all Canadians, I wish the best of luck for Mommy, which could be nominated for a Best Foreign Film Oscar.
