Second Enterprise Data Centre now operating in Borden, Ontario

(firmenpresse) - BORDEN, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 10/07/14 -- Borden Shared Services Canada

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister responsible for Shared Services Canada (SSC), today announced the opening of SSC's second enterprise data centre (EDC) in Borden, Ontario. The first EDC in Gatineau, Quebec, has been in operation since November 2013.

With the establishment of both EDC Borden and EDC Gatineau, the Harper Government is delivering on its commitment to modernize and standardize its information technology (IT) infrastructure that will reduce costs, improve service and increase security.

As part of the Harper Government's plan to transform its IT infrastructure, SSC is consolidating 485 existing data centres, spread across 43 departments, into seven modern, efficient and secure enterprise facilities, by 2020. To date, SSC has closed 10 data centres across the country and is planning to close another 47 this year.

The data centre consolidation activities, combined with the Government's Economic Action Plan initiatives, will reduce total annual data centre operating costs by approximately $99 million per year by 2020.

In addition to reducing costs, consolidating and modernizing data centres and networks will increase the Government of Canada's IT capacity, security and productivity. Renewing data centre and network infrastructure will improve physical and cyber security and will increase storage and bandwidth capacity to meet the Government of Canada's future requirements.

SSC's consolidation and transformation activities will generate significant benefits and permanent savings for the Government of Canada and for Canadian taxpayers.

Backgrounder

Data Centre Consolidation

The Data Centre Consolidation program is an initiative within Shared Services Canada's (SSC) mandate to work with 43 partner government agencies and departments to consolidate and modernize the Government of Canada's information technology (IT) infrastructure. The consolidation of data centres into modern and efficient facilities will result in reduced costs, improved service and increased security.

The Government is planning to consolidate 485 legacy data centres into seven enterprise facilities by 2020. Two of these enterprise facilities are operational and a third will be operational later this year. Six of SSC's enterprise data centres (EDC) are being established in pairs as backups to one another, and one additional EDC will be dedicated to high-performance computing. This will allow for the continuity of important government applications and is in keeping with industry best practices.

SSC's collaborative procurement approach enables the Government of Canada to benefit from the knowledge, input and experience of the information and communications technology sector. Data centre space procured through this process will adhere to SSC's consolidation principles of transforming from old to new infrastructure that is flexible, that offers built-in security at the outset and that provides standardized platforms that meet common requirements. SSC will continue to own and manage the servers and network infrastructure housed within leased space.

These data consolidation activities, combined with Economic Action Plan initiatives, will reduce total annual data centre operating expenses by approximately $99 million per year by 2020.
