California Egg Laws Ruffle Feathers; the happy egg co. Continues Call for Higher Animal Welfare Standards

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 10/08/14 -- Beginning January 1, 2015, all eggs sold in California must come from hens that are housed in bigger cages. At the happy egg co. there is no debate; the hen always comes first.

California's Proposition 2 sets specific standards for the Golden state's egg-laying hens, and AB 1437 requires out-of-state producers to do the same if they want to sell eggs in the state. In recent developments, a lawsuit from six major egg producing states opposing the change was dismissed by a Sacramento federal judge.

In preparation for this upcoming shift, the happy egg co. is preparing for an increase in consumer demand and awareness for where eggs come from.

"At the happy egg co., we've been providing true Free Range eggs nationwide through family farms since our U.S. launch in 2012," says David Wagstaff, chief operating officer at the happy egg co. "In fact, it's our mission to go above and beyond for our hens, giving them five acres to roam on outside every day."

Five acres on a happy egg farm translates to a minimum of 14 square feet per bird, which exceeds any current 'free range' egg standards.

"We are delighted that the support for higher animal welfare continues to be an important point on the agenda," Wagstaff says. "We expect to see demand for our eggs grow further over the next few months as consumers see Proposition 2 come into effect."

Free Range hens from the happy egg co. are free to roam daily and flap, perch, forage and dust-bathe, which is natural hen behavior. The happy egg co.'s unique, recyclable and compostable sunshine-yellow cartons stand out for their color and clarity in the egg aisle, assuring consumers that they are purchasing a truly humane product. Now offered in six and 12-packs, the happy egg co. Free Range eggs are available in more than 4,000 grocery stores nationwide.
