Philips to partner the Green Hospital: Global leader in the lighting
industry participates in the program initiated by Asklepios Clinics

05.07.2011 / 04:32

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Königstein (Taunus), 5 July 2011. Philips (www.philips.de), as official
partner and global leader in the lighting industry, is now supporting the
'Green Hospital Program' at Asklepios Clinics (www.asklepios.com) and its
partner companies. Andreas Wente, Chief Executive Officer at Philips
Deutschland GmbH, explains their participation in the Green Hospital. 'The
Green Hospital Program at Asklepios sets the benchmark in the health care
industry when it comes to hospital buildings and new constructions. The
Program defines new standards and trends that contribute substantially
towards creating new and sustainable quality models. In this way the
Program can set future standards for the entire health care industry.'

'The tasks, objectives and the approach that we set for ourselves within
the scope of the Green Hospital Program are of such enormous importance for
a 'Green Clinic of the Future' and of such complexity, that we can only
achieve them as a team within the scope of a 'Green Alliance',' emphasises
Dr. Wolfgang Sittel, Asklepios Executive Vice President Construction&Architecture. Which is why it is essential for the success of the Green
Hospital that companies such as Philips participate in the program. Mr
Wente defines the supportive attitude shown by Philips: 'Sustainability has
for many years been a fundamental part of Philips' corporate strategy. Yet
sustainability here is not solely limited to the development of sustainable
products and solutions for our customers,' says Andreas Wente, 'but instead
permeates our entire organisation and the configuration of our processes.'

The circle of companies actively involved in the Green Hospital Program has
been expanding steadily since the introduction of the concept a year ago.
The participation of companies such as Bayer MaterialScience, BE
Bauelemente, Caparol, Carrier, General Electric (GE), Hering Bau, Ideal
Standard, the German Institute for Hospital Hygiene and Infections Control
(IKI), nora systems, Saint-Gobain Isover and Zumtobel Lighting probably
makes the Green Hospital Program one of the largest and most significant
industrial environmental alliance in the clinical hospital sector
worldwide.

LED lighting and the clinical hospital environment

Participation by Philips in the Green Hospital has also attracted attention
due to the rapid development of LED technology. The 'digitalisation of
light' resulting from this is facilitating a radical change in lighting
systems and totally new lighting concepts that use energy more
intelligently and sustainably. Developments and innovations in this sector
are shaped by Philips to a significant extent. On average, almost a quarter
of all energy consumption expenses in a hospital are generated by lighting
costs. At times the energy consumption of a single hospital - if it is not
using energy-efficient technology - can approximate that of a small town.
Since many are still fitted with outdated lighting systems, a significant
energy savings potential exists in the implementation of innovativelighting solutions, including intelligent control systems. LED technology
plays a key role here. Already today, Philips offers a comprehensive
product portfolio in LED lighting solutions. As an official partner in the
Green Hospital Program, Philips not only provides competent lighting advice
but is also enabling a more rapid shift to a sustainable hospital through
its energy efficient lighting systems - many based on LEDs.

Enouraging initial results in two Asklepios Clinics

Sustainability does not mean going without. On the contrary - it is often
accompanied by a marked improvement in the quality of lighting. This has
been shown in joint projects between Asklepios and Philips at Asklepios
Clinic Barmbek and St. Georg, both based in Hamburg.
Asklepios Clinic Barmbek, for example, is achieving notable energy savings
by using Philips TL5-Eco fluorescent lamps and LED downlights and thus
significantly reducing CO2 emission.
At the Asklepios Clinic St. Georg, too, the newly installed Philips LED
outdoor lighting system is producing an energy saving of around 55 percent.
At the same time, its CO2 emission reduced accordingly. Within the
Asklepios community this means significant energy savings, as well as a
reduction in overheads since LED lighting solutions require little
maintenance and have a long service life.

'Role model behaviour in clinical hospital lighting systems may not only
redefine the financial needs of all clinics and stabilise health care costs
but also provide new inspiration for the lighting and illumination market.'
according to Mr. Wente. 'Companies that succeed in compatibly combining
economy and ecology will remain profitable in the future.'

About the Green Hospital Program
The Green Hospital Program at Asklepios Clinics and its partners is based
on three core areas: Responsibility for the environment, preventative
medicine, ecological use of energy in new constructions and the renovation
of clinics. This kind of Program is unique in Germany and Europe. Numerous
research and development projects in the areas of: Green Building, Green
Healthcare, Green Patient and Green Healthcare IT create the focus and
highlight the innovative power of the program. Through efficient use of
natural resources in the running of a hospital, the development and use of
renewable energy technologies, as well as the use of health-enhancing,
ecologically-friendly materials in hospital construction, the Green
Hospital Partner Program has set itself the objective to campaign for
ecologically-focused sustainability, qualitative responsibility in future
health care for the protection of the environment and the wellbeing of the
patient. (More information about the Green Hospital Program is available at
