(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 11/07/14 -- Have you heard of the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)?

Every year thousands of community organizations run tax clinics to help Canadians prepare and file tax returns across the country. It happens in communities just like yours through a program called the Community Income Tax Volunteer Program (CVITP).

The program has been around for over 40 years, and last year thousands of organizations and their volunteers helped file over a half a million income tax returns.

How does it work?

If you have a basic understanding of income tax and are interested in helping out your community, come lend a hand! Contact a participating organization in your community to become a volunteer or check the CRA website at . The CRA will support you by offering training and tax software. The registration period to become a volunteer is from October through January.

What's in it for you (as a volunteer)?

By filing income tax returns with the CVITP, you will help members of your community - your neighbours, friends, and family - maintain uninterrupted access to benefits and credits they are entitled to, such as the GST/HST credit and the Canada Child Tax Benefit. Canadians who use the services of the CVITP are those with modest incomes and a simple tax situation.

How do you get started?

To volunteer, you have to be affiliated with a community organization. Go to or call us at 1-800-959-8281 to find out more.
