TEDxToronto 2011 announces its first round of speakers for this year's event.

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/18/11 -- Entering its third year, announces today three of at least 12 speakers that will be participating in this year's event: Adam Garone, Co-founder and CEO of Movember, Ariel Garten, CEO of InteraXon and Brandon Hay, founder of the Black Daddies Club.

"We are excited to present speakers who are having such a massive impact on our communities," says Dan Jacob, Co-Chair for TEDxToronto. "TEDxToronto puts exceptional care in selecting the best speakers from all disciplines to bring ideas worth spreading to our attendees and thousands online."

Each speaker's work delivers real world examples of this year's TEDxToronto theme Redefinition. Dan Jacob says, "Definitions impose a frame on the world, shaping communities, social and political structures, our relationships, and ourselves. A changing definition can be the most powerful force on earth and a redefinition can change the world."

, Co-founder and CEO of , the global charity event that raises awareness and funds for men's health issues- specifically prostate cancer- through the power of the moustache. Movember, the world's largest private funder of prostate cancer research, has engaged over a million participants to grow and support moustaches for the month of November, raising $178 million to date. A recipient of the Ernst and Young "Entrepreneur of the Year" award in 2008, Adam's vision is that the moustache and Movember will have the same global impact on cancers affecting men that the pink ribbon has for breast cancer.

is the CEO and Co-founder of , creates thought controlled computing products and applications. Her work converts the workings of the mind into tangible solutions. , Founder for (BDC), started his organization when he realized that there was no existing group or organization with the mandate to help fathers in the black community learn how to be parents. Shortly after Brandon became a father at the age of 24, he began to patch up his relationship with his own dad. But the bonding was cut short when his father was murdered in 2003. Launching BDC was also a way to do something meaningful in honour of his late father. BDC strives to empower black fathers and fathers as responsible, involved and loving role modes, providing a source for new black fathers to learn from their older and more experienced counterparts in the community.

About TED = Technology, Entertainment, Design

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 26 years ago, TED has grown to support those world-changing ideas with multiple initiatives. At TED, the world's leading thinkers and doers are asked to give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Benoit Mandelbrot, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Isabel Allende and former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Two major TED events are held each year: The TED Conference takes place every spring in Long Beach, California (along with a parallel conference, TEDActive, in Palm Springs), and TEDGlobal is held each summer in Edinburgh, Scotland.

TED's media initiatives include TED.com, where new TEDTalks are posted daily; the new TED Conversations, enabling broad conversations among TED fans; and the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as the ability for any TEDTalk to be translated by volunteers worldwide.

TED has established the annual TED Prize, where exceptional individuals with a wish to change the world are given the opportunity to put their wishes into action; TEDx, which offers individuals or groups a way to host local, self-organized events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to become part of the TED community and, with its help, amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

About TEDx = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations).
