Janet Moyer Landscaping Offers Timely Tips for Smart Irrigation Month
(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/18/11 -- In support of Smart Irrigation Month in July, Janet Moyer Landscaping (JML), a full service landscaping company in San Francisco devoted to addressing the unique challenges of urban garden constraints, offers these tips:
1. Plan ahead. Draw a map of the area you want to irrigate. Identify locations of valves, the controller and irrigation lines. Then keep it current to allow for easier changes and fixes.
2. Keep your system as simple as possible. If you have many varieties of plant types or climate differences, use different zones. If they are similar, use fewer zones.
3. Check your water pressure and flow. See how long it takes to fill a 5-gallon bucket from the hose where you plan to start the irrigation. If it takes longer than a minute, your flow and/or pressure may be a problem. Ask a professional for assistance.
4. Utilize the highest quality materials available. Do it one time the right way.
5. Use the newest controllers, weather sensors, drip components and sprinkler heads. They may be slightly more expensive but will pay off in reduced water use, fewer weeds and a healthier garden.
6. Employ irrigation types effectively. Use drip for beds and containers, pop-up drip sprayers for annual beds and pop-up sprinklers for turf. Use the same size drip emitters and vary watering by plant through the use of more or fewer emitters per plant.
7. Check city codes for irrigation valve standards, especially pertaining to "back flow prevention" that stops garden water from returning to house water.
8. Water less. Turn irrigation down slightly and see if plants still thrive. If so, continue reducing water consumption until plants show beginning signs of stress, then increase irrigation slightly from this point.
9. It's better to water after sunrise but early in the day. Watering at night attracts animals and can encourage mildew.
