U.S. News Ranks Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center No. 22 in 'Best Hospitals' in Chicago Metro Area
(firmenpresse) - CHICAGO, IL -- (Marketwire) -- 07/21/11 -- Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center (SMEMC) ranks No. 22 out of 121 Chicago metro area hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's 2011-12 "Best Hospitals" list released on July 19. Chicago metro area rankings with the top 44 hospitals are available online at .
SMEMC earned distinctions as high-performing in four specialties: geriatrics, nephrology, , and pulmonology.
The regional rankings recognized 587 hospitals among the nearly 5,000 nationwide in or near major cities with a record of high performance in key medical specialties.
To be ranked in its metro area, a hospital had to score in the top 25 percent among its peers in at least one of 16 medical specialties. The rankings cover 94 metro areas that have at least 500,000 residents and at least one hospital that performed well enough to be ranked.
"Receiving the distinction as one of the top Chicago metro area hospitals -- excelling in four specialty areas -- is an outstanding achievement for our entire health care team," said Margaret McDermott, executive vice president and CEO, SMEMC. "This new ranking continues to build upon our strong clinical reputation both locally and nationally. The complement the national rankings by including hospitals with solid performance nearly at the level of nationally ranked institutions. The regional rankings are aimed primarily at consumers whose care may not demand the special expertise found only at a nationally ranked "Best Hospital" or who may not be willing or able to travel long distances for medical care. The U.S. News metro rankings give many such patients and their families more options of hospitals within their community and in their health insurance network.
Hard numbers stand behind the rankings in most specialties -- including death rates, patient safety, procedure volume and other objective data.
