Canada's Economic Action Plan project improves visitor service offer

(firmenpresse) - BATOCHE, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwire) -- 07/22/11 -- On behalf of the Honourable Peter Kent, Canada's Environment Minister and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Mr. Bradley Trost, Member of Parliament for Saskatoon-Humboldt, today announced the opening of the newly renovated visitor reception centre at Batoche National Historic Site of Canada.

"We are proud to provide new and exciting opportunities for visitors to connect to the heritage of this great country," said Mr. Trost. "Batoche National Historic Site has always offered visitors a world-class experience and these improvements to the visitor reception centre will only enhance these experiences and better share the amazing stories of this national treasure."

Improvements, totalling more than $3.67 million, included the updating of the mechanical and electrical systems in the Visitor Reception Centre, as well as the addition of two new sections, making them suitable to host events, meetings and receptions and to allow for more flexible use of the site.

Mr. Trost also announced the opening of the art exhibit, Resilience/Resistance: Metis Art 1880-2011, at the Visitor Reception Centre, one of the first Metis-specific exhibitions in Canada since 1985. This project was made possible by the Government of Canada funding of $4.25 million.

"One of the immediate benefits of these improvements is the ability to showcase the important role of Metis art in this spectacular art exhibit also opening today," said Minister Kent. "This investment confirms once more the importance of the Batoche National Historic Site as a welcoming and dynamic community meeting place."

The art exhibit curated by internationally renowned Metis artist, Sherry Farrell Racette, features historical and contemporary works from Metis artists across Canada.

"It is important for both the Metis and the Canadian public to become aware of the enduring importance and achievement of Metis artists," said Ms. Farrell Racette. "Their works gives visual testimony to the role of love, family, humour and innovation in creating and re-creating a culture founded on the dual power of resilience/resistance."

In 2011, Parks Canada is celebrating its 100th anniversary and its establishment in 1911 as the world's first national parks service. To recognize this occasion, Parks Canada is inviting Canadians to come celebrate by visiting Parks Canada places across the country.
