Gemalto enables mobile NFC ticketing for Madrid public transport
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Mobile World Congress, Barcelona - March 3, 2015 - Gemalto (Euronext
NL0000400653 GTO), is providing a comprehensive mobile contactless solution for
a pilot project that enables NFC easy and secure access to the Madrid transport
system. Gemalto is delivering its Allynis Trusted Service Manager (TSM) and
UpTeq Multitenant SIM with MIFARE DESFire technology respectively to CRTM
(Consorcio Regional de Transportes de Madrid), and Telefonica, Spain's leading
mobile network operator. The EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transportes de Madrid),
integrated Gemalto's TSM into CRTM backend systems. Gemalto will demonstrate the
solution at Mobile World Congress 2015 (Hall 5 Stand 5A80).
The project is designed to demonstrate the speed and convenience of the new
channel for end users, and a range of compelling commercial benefits for service
providers. Users will only have to download the transport application developed
by Samsung and specially designed for Samsung Galaxy smartphones. This solution
permits to provide services that guarantee users experience when receiving
rates, interacting with the transport virtual card to check their pending
balance, etc. The Samsung application allows to register payment cards securely
and conveniently purchase digital tickets. The TSM is used to top up the
application on the SIM with the tickets users buy now.
CRTM benefits from a highly efficient ticket sales channel which is available to
its customers 24/7, direct from their mobile handsets. Delays and bottlenecks at
ticket barriers caused by travelers fumbling to find the right card in a wallet
or purse are reduced, as travelers proceed with a swift tap of the phone on the
Madrid transport network's existing contactless readers.
"CRTM is committed to building on the success of its current contactless
ticketing system to further improve the traveling experience for customers,"
according to CRTM. "The initiative represents the first deployment of MIFARE
DESFire technology used in conjunction with the TSM to implement mobile
contactless ticketing within public transport."
"EMT always tries to use cutting edge technology, so we have developed a Desfire
Commands Server in the cloud, compatible with Public Transportation Card of
Madrid and NFC," said Enrique Diego Bernardo, CIO for EMT.
"Spain is established as a European trend-setter for early and enthusiastic
adoption of contactless services, so the shift to mobile-based solutions
represents the next logical step forward," added Philippe Cambriel, President
for Europe, Mediterranean and CIS at Gemalto. "With smartphone penetration now
at 83%, CRTM is in an ideal position to realize an attractive combination of
higher service standards and greater operating efficiency. And by selecting the
assurance of a NFC SIM-based approach for their mobile transport strategy in
Madrid is following the steps of other large cities like Hong-Kong and Shanghai.
