12 Race to the Top Schools Also Participating

(firmenpresse) - NASHVILLE, TN -- (Marketwire) -- 07/26/11 -- A record 300 teachers, principals, faculty and university officials from across the state last week concluded an intensive two-week institute designed to improve mathematics teaching and learning for children in Tennessee schools. Hosted by Tennessee State University, with support from Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Summer Mathematics Leadership Institute took place from July 11 - 22 on the grounds of the university.

The institute is part of the Strengthening Instruction in Tennessee Elementary Schools-Focus on Mathematics (SITES-M) program, which began four years ago with only 125 attendees. This year's event gathered 300 educators, legislators and officials, all of whom recognize the importance of high quality mathematics learning.

The event opened with remarks from Joe Fisher, Assistant Commissioner, Division of College and Career Readiness for the Tennessee Department of Education; Representative Barbara Cooper (D-Memphis); and Representative Tommie Brown (D-Chattanooga).

"At its heart, this institute and the larger SITES-M project are about putting stronger teachers in our classrooms," says Dr. Michael Nettles, Senior Vice President of ETS's Policy Evaluation and Research Center. "The added participation of twelve Race to the Top schools and the growing list of participating universities shows that people in Tennessee are committed to addressing achievement gaps -- and mathematics learning in particular."

Additional colleges and universities that are part of this project include:

Fisk University

Lane College

Knoxville College

LeMoyne-Owen College

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga

Institute participants received professional development in the areas of: mathematical content knowledge; mathematical knowledge needed to teach; formative assessment strategies; and the Framework for Teaching and Framework Observation Programs. The training is facilitated in cooperation with Carnegie Learning Inc., Mount Holyoke College, and GreenLight for Learning, LLC.

Concurrently, the Mt. Holyoke SummerMath for Teachers Program took place. This is the first time the Mt. Holyoke program has moved to Nashville. Check this link for facts about the Mt. Holyoke project: .

At a closing reception on July 21, Dr. Edward Hubbard from the Department of Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University discussed the future of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education and brain research. Hubbard also reported on new directions in mathematical acquisition for young children, with a focus on neurological processing and brain plasticity.
