At present, small cell investment is focused on improving coverage, increasing capacity and driving more efficient spectrum use. However, the densification of MNOs' networks comes as price wars are heating up, ARPU is declining, marketplace growth is coming from lower value devices and customers are shifting across the big 4 carriers. Due to these complications, MNOs must adopt an aggressive cost structure in order to deploy the tens and hundreds of thousands of small cells required to enhance performance.
"Small cell adoption is on the rise; however, there is not one particular driver to solely account for the increase," states Greg Weiner, Partner, Vertix Consulting. "Carriers are seeing a number of dynamics influencing the marketplace, including the evolution of the vendor-carrier relationship and menu-driven pricing. These influencers, as well as others, will force carriers to focus on keeping deployment and operating costs down by moving away from the traditional macro mentality and adopting a disciplined approach."
