Patreon Onboards 24 Influential Creators From Subbable, the Pioneering Subscription Crowdfunding Service Founded by Hank and John Green

(firmenpresse) - SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 03/17/15 -- Patreon announced today that they are acquiring Subbable, a subscription service that allows audiences to connect with and fund the creators they love in a sustained, ongoing way. As Subbable shuts down, Patreon welcomes 24 Subbable creators -- who collectively generate over $1,000,000 in annual revenue -- to their family of more than 10,000 financially active creators.

Subbable was founded by brothers John and Hank Green in 2013 to fund content creators who provide enduring value to their communities. Subbable relied on Amazon Payments to process subscriptions. When Amazon introduced a system-wide change in late 2014, Subbable faced a difficult decision: switch payment services and risk high attrition, or seek support.

Patreon and Subbable form a natural alliance given their common commitment to creators. After careful research, Patreon and Subbable agreed to join forces. Going forward, John Green will be taking an advisory role to Patreon with Hank Green, who was previously an advisor.

"We have profound respect for Hank, John, and all the creators on Subbable," said Jack Conte, CEO of Patreon. "These relationships are worth decades of value for Patreon. We've always been aligned in principle, now we are united in practice. I also have a huge creator crush on the Vlogbrothers, so I couldn't be happier today."

As part of the agreement, Patreon will onboard and launch John and Hank Green's online video series SciShow (2.4 million subscribers) and Crash Course (2.8 million subscribers). The two shows are dedicated to providing free education to global audiences and have cumulatively amassed 451 million views.

To ease the transition for creators and patrons, Patreon will match up to $100,000 in new pledges made to Subbable creators on Patreon from March 15th to April 30th before midnight PDT. The first creators to make $100,000 collectively will receive matched funds from Patreon. "From day one, Patreon and Subbable were guided by the same values and the same goals. Initially we came at the problem differently, and this helped us both improve our products and our services to creators," said Hank Green, co-founder and CEO of Subbable. "But once it was clear that we could help creators more together than apart, this was inevitable."

Patreon is already home to nearly 250,000 patrons with active subscriptions. At the end of last year, Patreon announced 3700% year-over-year growth. The 20-person team is expected to double by the end of 2015 and is currently sending more than $2 million per month to creators of all kinds.

Patreon connects creators, community, and capital via subscription crowdfunding. Patreon makes it possible for patrons to sustainably support the creators they love by pledging on a per project or per month basis in exchange for unparalleled access and tiered rewards. In turn, Patreon gives unusual care to creators and delivers robust tools for real intimacy with their biggest fans.

John and Hank Green founded Subbable in 2013 in order to help creators, including themselves, fund their work. John and Hank's YouTube channels, including SciShow, Crash Course, Mental Floss, and Vlogbrothers, have been viewed over a billion times. They also own DFTBA Records, a merchandise company for online creators and VidCon, the largest conference for creators and fans of online video.
